ճSundayRecital Series at will continue at 3 p.m. onSunday, November 15thwithflutist Erin Murphy in Francis Auditorium.
“This recital will featureBaroque, Classical, Romantic,and Impressionistic works, along with Irish flute music,” says Murphy. “Each piece will demonstrate a different style, mood, and personality, and listeners will have the opportunity to hear the distinct differences between classical flute and Irish flute.”
Murphy will be joined by pianist Lise Keiter for the well-knownSuite in B Minorby J.S. Bach,Mozart’s beautifulAndante, and the exciting and virtuosicFantaisie Pastorale Hongroiseby Franz Doppler. Doppler was a Polish composer and flute virtuoso living in the 19th-century, and theԳٲis one of his most popular works.Murphy will also play Debussy’sSyrinx, a short piece for solo flute that is considered one of the most important solo flute works in the 20th-century. And she will collaborate with guitarist Rafael ScarfulleryforEntr’acte,a piece by Spanish composer Jacques Ibert.
Murphy is not only a seasoned classical performer, but also a specialist in Irish flute. She will close the program with a selection of traditional Irish works, alongside fiddler Andy Cleveland, accordion-player Sean Sutor, and Glenn Sutor playing the bouzouki (a string instrument similar to the mandolin).
Murphy earned master’s and doctoral degrees from James Madison University, and she completed her undergraduate work at San Diego State University. She is the leader and founder of the tradition Irish session at Corgans’ Publick House in Harrisonburg, and she maintains an active participation in the traditional Irish music community.
Both Murphy and Keiter are members of the music faculty at . Keiter maintains an active performance schedule as both a soloist and chamber musician, and her recent engagements include concerts in Ohio, West Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and throughout Virginia. Guitarist Scarfullery performs regularly in the U.S. and in the Dominican Republic. He is a composer and organist, as well as an award-winning guitarist.
